Hyperventilation symptoms and their relationship to panic
نویسنده
چکیده
Symptom overlap between the Hyperventilation Syndrome (HVS) and Panic Disorder (PD) has been noted by many investigators; however, the reasons for this association are unclear. By following 50 college subjects (36 fema le and 14 male) who displa yed extremely high rates of hyperventilation symptoms over four-week to nine-month intervals, symptom stability patterns as well as the relationship to panic attacks were examined. Rates of overlap between hyperventi lation symptoms and panic attacks was 66% in the current sa~ple. Furthermore, 4 of 50 (8%) of pani cfr ee sub j ects developed panic attacks during the course of the investigation. Although the frequency of hyperventilation symptoms decreased over time for most subjects, many individuals continued to be symptomatic over time. One potential mechanism of association between hyperventilation and panic (i.e., focus on either somatic or somatic plus cognitive symptoms of hyperventilation) was not supported, and several personality variables (repression and anxiety sensitivity) were not found to influence the relationship between hyperventilation and panic. Finally, measurement issues related to a hyperventilation symptom questionna ire were addre ssed. The two-week test-retest

Brain pH response to hyperventilation in panic disorder: preliminary evidence for altered acid-base regulation.
OBJECTIVE Previous findings of excess brain lactate and delayed end-tidal CO(2) (pCO(2)) recovery in subjects with panic disorder during hyperventilation suggested altered acid-base regulation. Two models were posited to explain these results: 1) subjects with panic disorder demonstrate greater alkalosis to hyperventilation, implicating increased lactate as directly compensatory, or 2) subjects...
متن کاملHyperventilation in panic disorder patients and healthy first-degree relatives.
Our aim was to observe the induction of panic attacks by a hyperventilation challenge test in panic disorder patients (DSM-IV) and their healthy first-degree relatives. We randomly selected 25 panic disorder patients, 31 healthy first-degree relatives of probands with panic disorder and 26 normal volunteers with no family history of panic disorder. All patients had no psychotropic drugs for at ...
متن کامل[Prevalence of hyperventilation syndrome in patients treated for asthma in a pulmonology clinic].
OBJECTIVE Although the presence of hyperventilation syndrome can affect the symptoms of patients with asthma, there is very little information available regarding its frequency in Spain. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of hyperventilation syndrome in the asthmatic population treated as outpatients and establish its relationship with anxiety disorders. PATIENTS AND METH...
متن کاملHigh altitudes, anxiety, and panic attacks: is there a relationship?
People exposed to high altitudes often experience somatic symptoms triggered by hypoxia, such as breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, headache, and insomnia. Most of the symptoms are identical to those reported in panic attacks or severe anxiety. Potential causal links between adaptation to altitude and anxiety are apparent in all three leading models of panic, namely, hyperventilation (hyp...
متن کاملEmotional responding to hyperventilation as a predictor of agoraphobia status among individuals suffering from panic disorder.
Some data suggest that panic patients with extensive agoraphobia (PDA) display more intense respiratory distress during their panic attacks than Panic disorder (PD) patients. However, no studies have determined if PDA patients also show heightened sensitivity to a respiratory challenge compared to PD patients. The current study examined the differential emotional responding to hyperventilation ...
